Nearly a week has passed, and the leading campaigns are still reeling from the results of Super Tuesday. On the Republican side, the split between establishment Republicans and their evangelical base seems not to have deterred John McCain’s quest to secure the nomination. Meanwhile, the real story on the Democratic side is not the tightness of the race between Senators Obama and Clinton, but rather the Democratic voter turnout.
Super Tuesday became more significant than ever this year, because of the closeness of the races and the lack of a clear front-runner on either side (though McCain appears to have clinched front-runner status for now, despite a surging Mike Huckabee in the absence of Mitt Romney), and was the first time so many states held their primaries on the same day, creating a nearly national primary, representing votes from all major areas of the country, North, South, East, and West. Interestingly, Google searches seem to have predicted the results, and the day itself sparked huge ratings increases in both the traditional and internet media.
